The intent was to have a blog where I just wrote about everything related to WORDS. But especially about books. I read and I read and I read—since sleeping has become a bit iffy. But to talk about books without giving the essay or review some thought is not fair or even interesting. Over the next few days there will be at least one post about the eclectic assortment keeping me company on partially sleepless nights. Many definitely worth a plug.
Meanwhile just finished my second UCLA Creative Writing class. “Found Text.” Developing fiction or non-fiction pieces based on a ‘found’ piece of writing: instruction; surveys, etc; social media; recipes/menus; photos or other visual media; diaries/journals; technology. It was brilliant. I was a bit skeptical with a couple of the assignments but turns out they made me think and search and work at new ways to say whatever it is I’m trying to say.
I also have a new idea about how Up North will go. The first half will be a series of memoir/travel/autobiographical/family history shorts all connected to my Scandinavian heritage and Norway in some way. I’ve written several of them for these classes which will simply need to be expanded, I will add some new ones and voilà—half a book. I intend to put that together in November and December.
2015 will be all about the second half of Up North—growing up in Minnesota and my off and on times there since.
Note about MOOCS. While I do love them, the lectures have to be pretty engrossing to keep one focused after all of the other books, papers, plans, lists, work have been dealt with. French Revolution was; the Camera Never Lies would have been if one were studying at a deeper level but just watching lectures wasn’t so satisfactory. I’ve finally dis-enrolled after watching most of it.
I like posts to have a photo…what can it be?
